At a time when we are told it is under threat, a move like this which unites all those involved in the world of books, whether librarians, booksellers, collectors or readers, is both right and timely. 　書物はただに文字データの集積なのではなくて、そのobjectとしての佇まい、手触り、重み又は軽さ、デザイン、来歴、さらには、古色蒼然たる香りとか、虫食いやシミなどに至るまで、すべてを含んでの「存在」自体に無量の味わいがある。これを古人は「書巻の気」と言った。馥郁と立ち上る書巻の気を五感に享けるとき、我らが書物という文化を持ったことのなんぞ幸いなるかとうち歎かれる。そのようにして心の深みに沁み入ってくる思いを享受すること、これを読書というのである。
